4 Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

12/15/2025

    Christmas season is upon us!

Some people love this time of year. And some people hate it. While some of the reasons this season is stressful and painful can't be changed, somethings can. Here are a few tips to making this season just a little bit better than the year before!
Picture
MAKE A PLAN
Don't wait until you are in the middle of the holiday season to realize you are overwhelmed. Sit down now and decide what things are most important to you and what you want to be part of your holidays.

Reflect back on the previous Christmas season. What went well? What didn't go well? What would you change to make it better this year?

Maybe it's time at home alone enjoying Christmas music and quiet evenings looking at pictures of previous Christmases. Maybe it's baking Christmas treats. Maybe it's a specific tradition like cutting down a Christmas tree or a drive to see Christmas lights. Whatever you want to make sure is part of your holiday season, schedule it in now.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Know your limits and schedule in time for what you need.

If you are someone who recharges by being alone, schedule in time daily or between gatherings to introvert. If you recharge by being with people, try to work your schedule to be able to attend all the social events. If you live with someone who is different than you, talk about what each of you need and make a plan that works so you can both enjoy the holiday season to the fullest.

MANAGE STRESS
Managing stress is important for even the easiest times in life but it's especially needed during this time of the year! Schedule in 15-30 minutes every day for "me time" to do something relaxing to slow down your mind and body. Deep breathing, reading, bubble baths, puzzles, hot tea with music or reviewing your day with a friend all things that can restore and relax.

PROTECT YOUR SLEEP

It's easy to let things like sleep and eating well go by the wayside during the holidays. There can be pressure to let things go because it's "just this one time of year". But sometimes the recovery from letting things go is so much more work than protecting and working on maintaining habits during the holidays. Decide what boundaries you need around sleep. Decide which times you can bend on the boundaries and when you need to be disciplined. Telling your host when you need to leave ahead of time can give you accountability, help keep your boundaries and protect your sleep.

With a little intentionality, you can make this Christmas season better and happier for you and for everyone around you!

A HEALTHY TREAT TO START OFF THE DAY- PUMPKIN GRANOLA

Thanksgiving is almost here!

Sometimes I want to have a special, festive treat that isn't the typical pie that is loaded with sugar. And I'm never tired of anything pumpkin.

I found this recipe in a search for something special to make for my sister's birthday breakfast. Serve this to your guests on Thanksgiving morning as you gather around the table over steaming cups of your favorite tea to pause and remember all the blessings you've been given.
Picture
DAIRY FREE, GLUTEN FREE PUMPKIN GRANOLA

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 cups chopped raw pecans
  • 1 cup chopped almonds or cashews or a mix of both
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons coconut flour
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS
  • Preheat oven to 325° and grease a large baking sheet with sides.
  • In a large bowl, combine chopped nuts, shredded coconut, raisins, canned pumpkin, maple syrup, coconut flour, pumpkin spice, melted coconut oil, and salt. Stir well.
  • Place on baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
  • Stir and bake for another 10 minutes for soft granola or 20 minutes for crunchy granola.
  • Let fully cool and store in air tight containers.

*The first time I made this recipe I failed to read that the nuts should be chopped but it just made the granola a little bit more chunky rather than fine which was delicious. And the crunchy version is amazing if you are eating it with milk as cereal.

HAVE YOURSELF A HEALTHY LITTLE CHRISTMAS DRINK

Who says that healthy isn't also yummy? These are two of my favorite December drinks and I had to share with you!
Picture
Gingerbread Latte

SERVES 5
1 cup full fat coconut milk
1 cup almond milk
1/4 cup coconut sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup (or for a richer gingerbread flavor use unsulfured molasses)
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
5 cups of strongly brewed coffee or dandy blend

Combine the coconut milk, almond milk, coconut sugar, maple syrup, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a saucepan and whisk over medium-heat heat for 5 minutes. Stir in the coffee or dandy blend and working in batches, add the mixture to a blender (or use an immersion blender) and blend until frothy, about 15 seconds. Serve immediately.

To use as a coffee creamer: Combine everything except the coffee. Stir the creamer into a hot cup of coffee. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Eggnog

SERVES 4
1 (13.5-ounce) can full-fat coconut milk
6 whole cloves (or 1 drop of clove essential oil)
3 egg yolks
1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup or light-colored raw honey
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (or 1 drop of Madagascar vanilla essential oil)
1⁄2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup homemade cashew milk
Ground nutmeg, for garnish

Heat the coconut milk and cloves in a saucepan over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Whisk together the egg yolks, maple syrup, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a bowl. Slowly pour the hot coconut milk into the bowl, whisking continuously. Return the liquid to the pan and cook over medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring continuously. Do not let it boil. Pour the eggnog through a fine-mesh sieve into a glass container and whisk in the cashew milk. Cover and refrigerate until chilled completely, about 4 hours. Garnish with nutmeg. Make it ahead: Store the eggnog in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

5 Ways to Start the New Year Off Right

5 WAYS TO START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT

January-that time of year when the holiday festivities leave us feeling a few pounds heavier, a little more brain fogged and a little less energetic than we'd like to be. It's a New Year and a great time to reset our routines and choices!
Picture
Here are five simple ways to start the New Year off right!
  • DE-STRESS- Start with noticing signs that indicate you are stressed. Even better is to make a list of these things. Focus on awareness of when you are stressed and listening to your body.

  • Make a list of 10 things you truly enjoy that you feel refreshed and renewed after doing. As you become increasingly aware of when you are stressed, pull out your list and spend 10-15 minutes de-stressing.

  • EXERCISE- Just 15 minutes of movement every day, especially outside will help to balance your hormones, increase your energy and mood. Talk a walk in the snow, go sledding, ice skating or a bike ride when the weather is good.

  • GET YOUR SLEEP- Getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night is foundation to everything! Your weight, ability to detox, mood, energy, hormone balance, stress levels and even digestion!

  • Set a sleep and wake time and stay within an hour of that time frame to regulate your circadian rhythms. Take the 30-60 minutes before bed to turn off all screens, do some reading, journaling, devotions, gratitude or a relaxing bath with essential oils.

  • If falling asleep or staying asleep is hard for you, try Serenity softgels. They promote deep and restful sleep and are truly amazing!

  • DRINK WATER-  Drinking water hydrates your skin, improves digestion and elimination, reduces feelings of hunger and calorie intake and helps flush out toxins. Half your body weight in ounces daily is the general recommendation

  • REDUCE SUGAR- The average American consumes 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily! Sugar slows down your immune system, increases inflammation, creates brain fog and drains your energy. It's also contributes to heart disease, fatty liver, diabetes and cancer.

How to Make Your Christmas Gifts Scentsational

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFTS SCENSATIONAL

Ever want to add just a little something to a gift to make it personal and special? A drop or two of essential oils are the perfect way to create a warm, inviting gift that makes the receiver feel loved and treasured!

Picture
  • Scented Envelopes- A fun way to add sparkle and depth to your cards! Add 2-3 drops of essential oils to a cotton ball and place in a plastic bag with your envelopes or card. Let sit overnight or for 8 hours and then remove and send.

  • Scented Pinecones- A subtle way to add aroma to a room at the same time being decorative. Purchase a bag of pinecones or gather them from outside. If they are dirty, have bugs on them or are closed up, give them a quick rinse in the sink and then place in the oven on a sheet at 200 degrees for one hour. Add one drop per pinecone and place in a bowl, string as garland or give as a gift in a decorative bag. Reapply oils as needed for desired scent. Cinnamon, Holiday Peace/Joy, Fir or Pine oils are great choices for oils!

  • Scented Neck Wraps- Purchase a neck wrap or create your own with a tube sock or piece of flannel. Add 2-3 drops of a calming oil such as Lavender, Siberian Fir or Balance to the wrap. Consider giving a small bottle of oil along with the gift for continued scenting.

  • Scented Car Diffusers- I love how personal and customizable this can be! Create your own simple car diffuser by gluing felted stickers to clothespins and clipping to the vent or by sewing felted balls together.

  • Scented Body Scrub- Such a fun spa gift! Add Peppermint to make a candy cane scrub, Lemon or Rosemary & Spearmint for a refreshing, uplifting experience.

  • Scented Room/Linen Spray- So simple to make with a few ingredients! Plus you can customize the scent for holidays, seasons and moods.

6 Tips for a Healthy and Happy Holiday!

Picture
1. De-stress: Stress can greatly impact your immune system! Take 10-15 minutes every day for "me time" to do something relaxing to slow down your mind and body. Deep breathing, reading, bubble baths, puzzles, hot tea with music or reviewing your day with a friend.

2. Moderation and Healthy Substitutions: Limit your desserts to half portion or only one cookie from the tray. Say "no" when you are full. Substitute less processed sugars like coconut sugar, sucanat, honey and maple syrup for refined sugar.

3. Exercise: Don't forget this important part! Dance to your favorite Christmas music. Take a walk in the snow or to see the Christmas lights. Go sledding, skiing or play in the snow.

4. Simplify: Decide which things are really important to you and eliminate the rest. Don't let pressure make you do things because "you've always done them".

5. Get Your Sleep: You will be a better you when you are rested and can have energy to serve and love others. Try Serenity softgels or diffusing your favorite calming oils!

6. Rejoice! Gratitude lifts our spirits and helps us see joy in the journey. Try writing in a thankful journal every day.
